Welcome to Body Fat Chart Free Help and Advice
A certain amount of Body Fat is essential for maintaining good health. Body fat protects the vital organs and regulates body temperature. It also stores essential vitamins, protects the joints and sustains the body when food is in short supply such as during times of illness.
But while Body Fat is both essential and good in one regard, it is also extremely harmful for you in other ways, particularly if you have too much of it. Too much Body Fat is positively detrimental to your health. Too much Body Fat is a symptom of obesity, and obesity is a major cause of ill health and can lead to an early death. |
What is Body Fat?
Body Fat is made up of essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat, as the term implies, is fat that is essential to your body's needs. It is stored energy. Storage fat is fat stored in the body by consuming more calories than your body requires - essentially, eating too much and exercising too little for the amount you are consuming. If you want to lose weight, you need to eat less and 'consume' that storage fat by exercising more.
When we talk of wanting to lose weight, what we really mean is that we want to lose that storage fat, that fat which is surplus to our body's requirements and is there because we eat and drink more than our body needs for normal daily functions.
How is Body Fat Measured?
Body Fat is measured in a number of ways using skinfold calipers, body fat analysers and body fat sensors. Many recommended products are featured elsewhere on this page.
Body Fat Percentage
Simply put, your Body Fat Percentage is the percentage of fat your body contains. Too much or too little is detrimental to your health. Your Body Fat Percentage affects both your shape and your health. Since muscle is more compact than fat, someone with less body fat will naturally look slimmer. They will also be considerably more healthy!
